So your dog mistook the skunk for the cat, hugh?! Save your tomato juice for a cocktail afterward. Here’s a simple solution that most of us already have the ingredients in our cabinets to de-skunk your dog.

Skunk spray can be very irritating to dogs. If you notice their eyes are red or watering, rinse them with cool water or with saline solution. Now we need to address the rest of their body…

What you’ll need:

  • 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • ¼ cup baking soda
  • 1-2 drops liquid dish soap
  • 2-3 drops lemon essential oil (optional)

Step 1: Mix all the ingredients together and stir well. You’ll want to quickly apply the mixture on your dry dog (be careful not to get in their eyes). A chemical reaction between the ingredients takes place that begins to neutralize the odor. Let mixture sit for approximately 5-7 minutes and rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Step 2: Next, follow up with washing your dog with dog shampoo and rinse thoroughly.

Step 3: Give your dog a treat!

Depending on how bad your dog was sprayed, you may have to repeat the process two to three times.
