Pet Cancer Awareness Month is a time to bring attention to, offer support, and spread hope for pets diagnosed with cancer. At Bark Avenue Daycamp, we believe it’s important to celebrate the joy our dogs bring into our lives and acknowledge the challenges some pets face—like cancer. Every year, millions of pets are diagnosed with cancer, and while it’s a tough reality, advancements in veterinary care are offering new hope for these brave animals.
As the Founder of Bark Avenue Daycamp, I, Michelle, have recently faced this heartbreaking reality with my own dog. It’s a journey no pet parent wants to walk, but through this experience, I’ve found strength, compassion, and hope. I’d like to take a moment to share Bayliss’s story with you, in the hope that it will offer some comfort and understanding to those who may be facing similar challenges.
In July, my beloved dog Bayliss received a devastating diagnosis: B- cell lymphoma. The news hit me hard, and I was filled with fear and uncertainty about what lay ahead. The thought of putting my 12-year-old pup through chemotherapy was daunting. However, the incredible team at Veterinary Specialty in Bannockburn took the time to educate me about the process, alleviating my fears and arming me with the knowledge I needed to make the best decision for Bayliss. With their support, we embarked on a journey that would change both our lives.
Over the course of 19 treatments, I was thrilled to learn that Bayliss achieved clinical remission after just six sessions. To make our frequent trips to the vet more enjoyable for him, I decided to turn them into special “chemo dates.” Each time after his treatment, we would stop at McDonald’s to share a four-piece McNugget, followed by a visit to Starbucks for a pup cup. These little rituals transformed our long hour-long drives—each way—into cherished bonding moments filled with joy and laughter. Bayless would happily munch on his treats and then curl up for a well-deserved nap on the ride home.
Now, as Bayliss approaches his 13th birthday in March, I can’t help but reflect on how far we’ve come. The bandana he proudly wears, signed by all the wonderful medical staff who cared for him, serves as a beautiful reminder of our journey together. I never would have believed that I would put a senior dog through chemotherapy, yet here we are, celebrating his resilience and spirit. Despite my initial fears, I see now that he has maintained his quality of life throughout this process, thriving in ways I never thought possible. If I had to do it all over again, without a doubt, I would. Bayliss has taught me the true meaning of perseverance, and I am endlessly grateful for every moment we share. Each day is a precious gift, and I look forward to many more adventures with my brave, loving boy by my side.

In honor of Pet Cancer Awareness Month, here’s how we can all play a part in supporting pets affected by cancer and ensuring they live their best, happiest lives:
1. Early Detection Can Save Dogs’ Lives
Just like in humans, early detection of cancer can significantly improve a pet’s prognosis. Regular vet checkups, monitoring changes in your pet’s behavior, and keeping an eye on any unusual lumps or bumps are essential. If something seems off, don’t hesitate to schedule a visit with your vet. At Bark Avenue Daycamp, we always remind our pet parents to stay vigilant about their dog’s health and well-being.
2. Mental Stimulation & Emotional Support Matter
Pets undergoing cancer treatments need more than just medical care; they need emotional and mental support too. A calm, positive environment can help reduce stress, boost their mood, and support their overall well-being. That’s why we focus on providing dogs with enrichment activities that are mentally stimulating, physically gentle, and emotionally comforting. Whether your dog is recovering from treatment or simply needs a supportive space to relax, Bark Avenue Daycamp is here to offer a safe and loving atmosphere.
3. Support Research and Awareness to Join the Fight
By participating in events like Pet Cancer Awareness Month, donating to organizations supporting pet cancer research, or simply educating others about the signs and symptoms of pet cancer, we can all contribute to the fight. Let’s make sure that pet owners everywhere are empowered to take proactive steps in protecting their dogs and offering them the best possible care.
4. Care for the Whole Dog, Not Just the Diagnosis
A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, but it’s important to remember that pets are more than just their illness. They are loving companions who deserve joy, comfort, and the chance to live fully, regardless of their diagnosis. Whether through daycamp sessions that allow them to interact with other dogs or special one-on-one time for quiet bonding, we make sure every pet who comes through our doors is treated with compassion and care.
5. How You Can Help Your Dog with Cancer
If your dog is undergoing cancer treatment or facing health challenges, we’re here to support you every step of the way. At Bark Avenue Daycamp, we offer Solo Play sessions for dogs who need a more individualized experience. This option is perfect for dogs who require a quieter, one-on-one environment, allowing them to have a private suite for the day. In their suite, they’ll have their own Kuranda bed, a blanket, a chew toy, and fresh water to ensure they stay comfortable during any downtime between enrichment sessions.
These dogs will receive 3 enrichment sessions throughout the day, each lasting 30-35 minutes and customized to fit their unique needs. Whether it’s gentle activities to boost mental stimulation or calming exercises, these sessions are designed to enrich their day without overwhelming them. After each session, they’ll return to their private suite to rest and decompress, ensuring they have the peace and quiet they need to recharge before their next round of activities.
This approach allows dogs who need extra care to experience the same mental stimulation and enrichment as others, all while maintaining a peaceful, low-stress environment that’s perfect for their health and well-being.
Pet Cancer Awareness Month reminds us of the challenges pets and their families face when dealing with a cancer diagnosis. By sharing Bayliss’s journey, I hope to offer hope and strength to others going through similar struggles. At Bark Avenue Daycamp, we’re dedicated to supporting pets with cancer through specialized dog care, enrichment, and emotional support. Together, we can raise awareness, provide comfort, and help our furry friends live their best lives, no matter the obstacles. Let’s continue to spread hope and make a difference for pets everywhere.
