Beacon Academy Students at South Elgin High School Get Real World Experience, Creating Commercials for Bark Avenue Daycamp

Bark Avenue Daycamp’s Owner and President, Michelle Sarwas, had the unique experience of being able to work with Beacon Academy, which is part of South Elgin High School in Elgin, IL, on a very creative project that they were doing for one of their classes. This particular class had been studying marketing and advertising and had been tasked by their teacher to create a commercial for a local business.

Being that Bark Avenue Daycamp is an elite dog training facility in Bartlett, IL, we were asked if we would work with the group of students and let them come into our facility to learn about what we did. The group spent two different days watching our trainers in action and filming various aspects of what goes on from the dog trainer’s perspective.

We think they did a good job capturing the essence of what we try to teach our clients – although training your dog is necessary, it’s also a whole lot of fun! We love nothing more than being able to give back to the community and to be able to give back to young people, especially by engaging in these kinds of projects! Below you will find the students’ final work in a 15-second commercial that was produced by the students in collaboration with their instructors. We were also able to capture feedback from some of the students upon completion of their marketing and advertising apprenticeship project.

Hear From the Students About Their Experience

Tarani Kalagara, Beacon Academy Student
  1. What was your favorite part of this project?
I loved seeing the dogs. As a person afraid of dogs, doing this project was a little challenging at first. But watching these guys interact with trainers and their owners was so heartwarming, and watching them grow in single sessions was incredible.
  2. What was your first impression of Bark Avenue Daycamp?
My first impression was how many people were going in and out, each with lots of energy. And also how bright and fun the space was.
  3. Did anything funny happen during filming?
I loved how natural some of these dogs were. They were able to sense the camera and weren’t afraid to put on a show. There was this particular dog, Daisy who would love to come up to the lens and lick it which was adorable (and made for some pretty cute shots!).

  1. What was your favorite part of this project?
It was really fun coming up with a creative idea and then watching it all come together. It’ll be even more awesome to see it in action on Facebook! Then it’ll be very surreal.
  2. What was your first impression of Bark Avenue Daycamp?
From what I saw from the footage it was a lot bigger than I expected. Also, I wasn’t expecting there to be so much equipment for the dogs. It seemed like the dogs get really well trained in all different ways.
  3. Did anything funny happen during filming?
Seeing all the dogs was super charming and they were all so cute! I loved watching all the dog’s interactions with the camera and watching all their behavior. So cute!
